Joe Biden will try to regulate the use of weapons in the US

Faced with pressure from the shootings in Atlanta and Colorado, President Joe Biden announced on Thursday six measures to limit the use of weapons in the United States, reported Telemundo 51.

The Democratic president, from the White House, assured that the armed violence in the American union is an international shame, also said that his plans do not undermine the Second Amendment.

“I will use all the resources at my disposal to protect Americans from gun violence. The Senate must put the prayers aside and start taking action, “said Biden.

The Second Amendment to the US Constitution deals with the right of citizens of this country to own and bear arms, in addition to establishing that neither the federal government nor the state and local governments can infringe this right.

One of the measures is a plan to be formulated by the Department of Justice to curb the proliferation of homemade weapons because they are difficult for the authorities to trace because they lack a serial number.

A weapon of this type was used in the shooting in a Colorado supermarket which caused the death of 10 people.

The aforementioned department was also ordered to regulate the “arm brace” devices that can convert handguns into high-precision rifles.

Another measure is that state judges have powers to restrict access to weapons to certain people, and programs will also be promoted to reduce the levels of armed violence in urban areas.

The US president also asked the Department of Justice to make reports on arms trafficking, a document that has not been prepared since 2020.

As part of his plan, the Democrat named David Chipman, a former agent who defends gun regulation, as a candidate to take office in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Chipman must be confirmed by the Senate where there will likely be an intense debate over the president’s proposals that would find support in a fragile Democratic majority.

For the president, this issue will be a challenge since Republican senators have blocked several points on the Democratic legislative agenda, including gun control.

10 years ago, the US Supreme Court ruled that no state or local law can restrict the right to own or bear arms recognized by the Second Amendment.
