Anyone who’s been the least bit interested in the world of freestyle knows who he is. Lucho SSJ. The Argentinian revolutionized the scene with his rhymes at just 14 years old. El Quinto Escalón, the famous Argentinian competition, has seen him grow since 2016 and those who have followed each of his fights have a special affection for him.
But later he wanted to put his feelings to music, and for this reason he started releasing his own songs. At 16 he released his first EP new blood then came his first studio album Level. Artists of the stature of Duki, Khea, Neo Pistea and Tiago PZK have shown him loyal support on each of these releases.
He talked about his musical evolution, his relationship with Duki, his collaboration with Arón Piper and his latest album Buscándome at LOS40 Urban. Here’s what the young freestyle legend told us:
Question (Q): Your last album is coming in 2022, looking for me. What challenges are you overcoming with this project?
Answer (R): For me, it’s more about the music I wanted to make. More to my liking. Finding more than anything, as its name suggests, looking for my style, looking for what I wanted to do. This is the music that I wanted to reach and this is the challenge that I took up.
Q: One of the songs you include is with Arón Piper, God forgive me. How was the experience of working together?
A: I know Aron because I saw that he gave me follow, he liked my music and what I was doing and we started talking. A few messages and when I arrived in Spain we met, we met, we went to the studio and things went really well. Everything came out very natural and very fluid. A great colleague and person.
Q: Now you are collaborating with CRO, Neo Pistea and Obie Wanshot on WOW. How was the process?
A: We are all music lovers. I had gone with CRO to Uruguay to record some songs and first he and I did it together and he went through the process of inviting the boys. We did the music video and the song is doing great.
Q: Lucho, you started very young in the music world. What do you think would have happened to Lucho SSJ if he had started later?
A: I think in a very different way because everything I learned on the way to freestyle helped me a lot in becoming who I am today when it comes to recording a song. It’s like everything is a lot easier for me because of the way freestyle is done, it’s more fluid in the studio. I don’t know how much that would have changed. That’s a good question.
Q: How did music come into your life?
A: For freestyle. I encountered freestyle watching an old battle and I was like, ‘wow, what’s up with that. And that’. Later, in the square in my neighborhood, I went, I did some freestyle, I listened… I went to a competition, I registered but they did not register me, I am left sad and that’s where I started. After that, I didn’t stop and I started making music, and when I started making music, I didn’t do freestyle anymore. I love music.
Q: How would you define your personal evolution as a young artist who started very early in music?
A: It’s a difficult process to explain because I started when I was very young and when I started writing songs my voice changed a lot. As I was releasing songs my voice changed the most and as I got older my voice changed. I think people who follow me from the beginning already know that, that I feel that I have a connection with people who have listened to me since before, who have evolved with me and who have seen my musical and personal change. This connection is super nice.
Q: You have started the fifth stage. Would you like the competition to return?
A: Yes, that would be historic. But I also believe that what happened remains an emblem and will be part of history. Nobody will forget what happened and it will remain there and it will be difficult to replace it with another competition.
Q: Duki always shows you unconditional support. He also evolved with his sound. What do you think of his project?
A: For me today he’s at his best, he’s breaking it everywhere and I think that’s something he deserves before because he’s a super talented and super nice person. He’s always been super good and we’re great friends. He deserves to be where he is. He’s breaking it on other levels today.
Q: Everyone is asking for a new song with Lucho. Is something happening?
A: Yeah, something’s on the way.
Q: Everyone loves you very much. What’s the key?
A: I think most of the colleagues who like me and respect me on stage is because they’ve known me since I was a kid, I put it in and, nothing, I look for what I have and this is it. It’s respect, they’ve known me since I was a kid and they know how I am. I also love them all and it’s a mutual respect that I have for each of them. They are all good people. I have colleagues in Argentina, here in Spain I also have artists with whom I have very good relations.
Duki is a super talented and super nice person.
Q: What’s the next step?
A: An EP is forthcoming produced by a Spanish producer, Arcone. There are four themes. I uploaded the odd preview on Instagram. In nothing, we released the first advance titled Neymar Junior And this project excites me a lot because I feel that it is another facet of me. It’s really good music and I have a feeling people are going to like it a lot. Very happy with what’s to come. We are going to present it in Buenos Aires when we arrive for my birthday in a presentation show.
