Facebook said it will lift its ban on political and social affairs ads imposed after the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Political candidates, groups and others will be able to place ads on Facebook and Instagram starting Thursday.

The restriction of political ads after the November elections was among the measures implemented by the social network last year in an attempt to ensure that the platform was not used to sow chaos and spread disinformation.

Facebook stopped political ads in the United States when the polls closed on November 3, in an extension of a previous restriction of new political ads in the week leading up to Election Day.

He said then that the ban would be temporary but did not offer a date for its end.

“We have received numerous feedback on this and learned more about political and election announcements during this election cycle,” the company said in a blog post Wednesday.

“As a result, we plan to use the next few months to closely examine how those ads work on our service to see where more changes are needed.”

Twitter has permanently banned political ads.
