The Los Angeles County Parks Department offers various programs throughout the year so residents can enjoy outdoor activities.

One of these programs is “Todos exploramos” (Everyone explores), an opportunity for everyone to be in direct contact with nature.

“We All Explore” is offered at seven nature centers in Los Angeles County. Participants can reserve backpacks containing exploration materials, activity guides and information on how to stay safe.

“It’s very interesting to start guys to see what’s out there,” said Kenia Estrella, recreation manager for the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Division of Nature Centers.

“The new generation is almost always inside and they don’t know that we have animals, that they live here all year round.”

The “Todos Exploramos” program will be in effect until May 27, in the seven participating centers, from Tuesday to Friday, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. is Eaton Canyon, Pasadena, where Estrella works.

“Here, near the center, we have a garden of native California plants,” Estrella explains. “If you walk near the center you will find many native plants.”

Estrella has had a particular passion for nature since childhood. Currently, she is one of the Recreation Managers for the Los Angeles County Parks Department.

“I grew up here in Altadena and went to the local John Muir High School,” Estrella says. “There they taught me a program called Careers and Conservation and from there they started taking us to our local mountains and showing us nature.”

Les Amis des Rivières wants to have an impact on nature by planting plants and trees in the city’s parks and other green spaces.

The “We All Explore” program now lets you share lessons about interacting with animals.

“When you leave food for your dogs or cats, nature (wild animals) comes looking for food,” Estrella explains. “It teaches that they can come very close to your house.”
