MIAMI, Florida – Earth Day, a date observed from April 22, 1970, was born in the United States.

It is a day to demonstrate support for the protection of the environment and ecosystems.

The day was proposed during a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, California, in 1969 by peace activist John McConnell.

THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME EARTH DAY WAS HELD IN 1970

The date was sanctioned, and included a nationwide educational campaign on the environment and was dubbed “Earth Day.”

More than 20 million people took to the streets in demonstrations in favor of the environment and measures to stop pollution that first Earth Day. It was the largest popular demonstration in favor of the Earth in the United States.

It was during Earth Day in 2016 that more than 120 countries, including the US and China, signed the historic Paris Agreement to, among other goals, reduce gas emissions.

Two young people from Lamar Academy in McAllen are demonstrating with their talent and initiative how to raise awareness about caring for the environment through an ecological and sustainable clothing line.

During the 70th anniversary of Earth Day, IN 2020, more than 100 million people participated through the internet in the massive mobilization.

Every Earth Day, communities carry out activities in favor of the environment and launch educational campaigns.
