The mother of an 11-year-old boy found drugs in the happy meal she bought at the fast food outlet McDonald’s in Maine. The substances were not part of her order and caused outrage in the minor’s family last week.
Shirlee Marchesseault found the packages of Suboxone, a drug that is used to treat addiction with opioids, in the order she made at McDonald’s in the city of Auburn on June 30. After reporting the incident, two employees were detained by the police.
Local media obtained photographs of the medicine packages in the “Happy Meal” box. Marchesseault said that her “blood was boiling” after finding them in the order for her child.
According to the police, an investigation concluded that the drugs fell from an employee’s shirt pocket, Michael Sevey, who was at the self-service window. Furthermore, it was said that Mariah Grant, 29, allegedly sold the packages to Sevey at the start of the shift.
“The clerk bent down to retrieve something from behind the counter, at which point the prescription and pen fell out of his shirt pocket and landed in the ‘Happy Meal’ box,” police said in a statement.
Sevey didn’t realize he had dropped them until the incident was reported at the store. McDonald’s management supported the investigation to find those responsible.
Authorities of Maine said that Mariah Grant had been charged with a felony of illegal drug trafficking and Michael Sevey was charged with a misdemeanor offense of illegal drug possession.
The two involved in the incident must appear in court on November 3.
