Rolando Yague, 61, had been using a laser to aim at the cockpit of landing and taking off planes for more than a year, in an effort to distract and blind their pilots.

The complaints had been made by several airlines at Miami International Airport, complaining about the risk it posed to the safety of both the aircraft and the terminal.

Finally, after several investigations, the police found the Antillean, who they found a mile and a half from the east side of the airport, according to the report from Univision 23.

Yague used a green laser pointer, which reached into the cockpits of the planes, making it difficult for the pilots to see them.

Now the Cuban faces a charge for “misuse of a laser lighting device,” according to the judge in bail court this Thursday, March 4.

According to the authorities’ report, Yague was outside walking his dog when he saw a plane flying above him, so he pulled out the pointer and pointed it at the plane.

Apparently, the man discovered this ability of the device, which was capable of reaching aircraft, as an accident and continued to do so as a “joke” for fun.

However, the authorities determined that it was a risky behavior, which compromised the performance of the pilots and could lead them to crash the aircraft, especially during landing.

In the arrest report, detectives described the pointer as “a device that is used to illuminate the cabin of the plane and cause damage to the aircraft and the pilots who operate it,” he cited 7News.

The officers also clarified that by putting the plane at risk, its passengers, crew and workers who work in the terminal and especially on the runways were also put at risk.

Police noted that Yague had an additional device, which he used to further illuminate his laser, as if increasing its power.

The Cuban is currently being held in the county jail, although he obtained bail in the amount of $5,000.

Yague also faces several additional charges in Polk County, although these were not specified.
