The death of rapper Coolio, 59, was caused by the effects of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine, according to a report from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Details of the “Gangsta’s Paradise” and “Fantastic Voyage” artist’s cause of death have been confirmed by his manager. The medical examiner also noted cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that can prevent the heart from pumping blood to the body, and asthma in significant conditions.
Coolio, whose legal name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr., died Sept. 28 at a friend’s home in Los Angeles. His death prompted a slew of tributes from celebrities, including Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube.
Rapper Coolio, best known for his Grammy-winning hit “Gangsta’s Paradise,” was a father of six.
The worldwide hit song “Gangsta’s Paradise”, which sold six million copies, won the 1996 Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance and was nominated for this award in the Song of the Year category. The theme also appeared in the 1995 film “Dangerous Minds”, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer.
“Global recognition has seen Coolio feature his music in several major films including: ‘Space Jam’, ‘Clueless’, ‘The Big Payback’, ‘Panther’, ‘New Jersey Drive’, ‘The Jerk Boys’, ‘Eddie , ‘Half Baked’ and many more,” reads Coolio’s website.
Other popular songs by the artist include “Fantastic Voyage” and “CU When U Get There”.
Coolio’s estate plans to release a studio album later this year that he had been working on in the days before his death.
