This March 1 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of one of the most iconic albums in music history: The dark side of the moon, the eighth album by the British group Pink Floyd. An album that redefined the concept of rsymphonic rock and which has become, over time, one of the best-selling and most influential in history. The magnitude of this album is such that it continues to be a source of inspiration for artists even today.
Considered by experts as a conceptual work, the red thread of the songs is centered on subjects as human as greed, the obsession with death or the passing of time… It is estimated that, since its publication, it has sold some 45 million copies. copies in the world, which places The Dark Side of the Moon as the third best-selling album in history, after the Polar of Michael Jackson and the Back in black of AC DC.
The group emerged under the leadership of their lead vocalist and lead songwriter, Syd Barrett. With his sound and his words, he had become the main reference of British psychedelia. Bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and the keyboardist Richard Wright he completes the quartet, always in the shadow of the genius and excesses of the vocalist.
However, in The Dark Side of the Moon, Syd Barrette he had already distanced himself from the group and was deeply ostracized. Barrett had to leave the ship due to his drug problems, mainly LSD, which led to severe mental deterioration. The band signed the guitarist David Gilmour with the initial idea of replacing their frontman when he was unable to perform live, but they soon saw that this situation was untenable and Syd Barrett was permanently kicked out.
This circumstance was a serious trauma for pink floyd and it would be a central theme in some of his later albums. Without their most prominent composer at the helm, the others have had to step up, especially Roger Waterswho would become the lead lyricist and who, with Gilmour, would share voice work from then on.
To commemorate this anniversary, the group will create a special and limited edition of the album.
