Holding, Arteta’s bad cop who still rides the subway

Arsenal had eight central defenders before starting this season. That list included three signings: Pablo Marí, Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba. Just a few days before starting the course, Rob Holding had everything agreed to go on loan to Newcastle throughout the year. However, just started 2021, Holding is the undisputed owner and has just extended its contract with the Gunners until 2024, another example of how quickly football can change.

Holding has become insurance for Mikel Arteta. The English center-back has started 10 of the last 11 games and is more assured of his position than at any point in the nearly five years he has been a Arsenal footballer, after Wenger signed him from Bolton for just 2 million. In fact, the Alsatian coach said in his day: “I’m sorry, but Holding didn’t cost 55 million”, in a defense of his player. A tear in his anterior cruciate ligament in 2018 put his future at the club in limbo, but he has recovered.

His profile as a center-back is perfectly complemented by Pablo Marí, with whom he has recently shared the lineup. In his day, Mertesacker described Holding as “the bad cop” of the two and now history is repeating itself. In an interview with The Telegraph, Holding explains: “I’m a little more unpleasant than Pablo. He is the most positive person on the planet, you see him and he directly makes you happy,” he says.

Holding’s life in London is very different from that of Stalybridge, his hometown near Manchester. “If I want to go to the city, I get on the subway,” he says. “I don’t think about buying a private car so they won’t bother me. If someone recognizes me and wants to chat, I’ll chat. The novelty of that does not go away. In Manchester everyone is a little nicer, so everyone talks, but in London it’s a little quieter. “
