Guinea Bissau.- International arrest warrant issued for former Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira

The Guinea Bissau Prosecutor’s Office has issued an international arrest warrant this Friday against former Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira, presidential candidate on December 29, 2019 and leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).

The official statement, collected by the RFI station, does not include the specific charges that are imputed to him. Simoes Pereira recently left the country a few days, before the inauguration of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, since then he has lived in exile in Portugal.

Simoes Pereira himself has said he is unaware of the existence of such an arrest warrant against him and has assured that he found out through social networks. Somoes Pereira had expressed his intention to return to the country to continue his political activities.

According to a source close to the accusation, the prosecutor Fernando Gomes has made several trips to Portugal, and would have tried unsuccessfully to hear the defendants about funds placed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in an account of the State of Bissau.
