German Vaccine Institute praises Astra-Oxford inoculation efficacy

FRANKFURT, Jan 14 (Globe Live Media) – The head of Germany’s vaccine regulator described the success rate of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine as excellent on Thursday, after some Australian scientists expressed skepticism about its efficacy. Speaking during an online press conference, Germany’s Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) president Klaus Cichutek said there had been some debate about the best pattern of vaccine use.

“Still, the efficacy is still outstanding and excellent,” he said, citing data. The AstraZeneca injection, developed in conjunction with the University of Oxford, was shown in a trial to be at least 62% effective, and the UK health regulator identified 80% efficacy under a certain pattern of administration.

That compares with an efficacy of around 95% for vaccines developed by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech, as well as Moderna.
