Over ten minutes of gameplay in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom introduced four incredible new powers that will change the way the game is played.
A video showing over ten minutes of gameplay from the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was posted on Nintendo of America’s YouTube channel today. Producer Eiji Aonuma narrates and controls Link throughout the video. Not everything has been revealed, but the video highlighted several new powers and lots of cool details to make you even more excited for this highly anticipated game. Watch the full video below:
All of these abilities have been featured in previous trailers, but this video finally explains them in more detail.. The first ability shown was called Recall, which allowed Link to reverse time on an item. During the gameplay video, as Link approached one of the floating “sky islands” (the official name given by the video), a small block of stone fell from the sky. By using the Recall power and jumping on it, Link can ride the block in the sky and access the islands.
Once on the islands Link encounters a new type of enemy called the Construct.. These strange enemies have appeared in trailers, but until now it was unclear if they would be enemies. Link then uses a new power called Fuse to combine a staff with a rock and defeat enemy buildings. Fuse seems to be the primary way to craft various items in Tears of the Kingdom.
The power of Fuse allowed Link to create the “search arrows” featured in the trailer above. Fusing a Keese’s eyeball with an arrow will cause it to become a quest arrow. A new type of mushroom, called Puff Shroom, has been shown fused with a shield.. When an enemy construct hits the shield, it creates a puff of smoke that darkens the area and gives Link a chance to sneak attack.
The Ultrahand ability, which allows Link to join objects together, takes the concept of creation even further. The game featured Link sticking several logs together to create a raft, then two fans in the back to propel him forward. Apparently, the “car” and the hot air balloon shown in the trailer above were products of this power. It seems to allow for endless creativity, and it’s impossible to imagine what players will come up with..
Finally, the last ability, called Ascend allows Link to jump through any “ceiling” and spawn above it.. It can be as simple as a thin stone ceiling or as large as a cave at the bottom of a cliff. This seems to create a great alternative to rock climbing, at least when there’s a “ceiling” of some sort.
In the final moments of the video, a new edition of Tears of the Kingdom for Switch was announced. This edition will be released a few weeks before Tears of the Kingdom on April 28.
With everything that’s gone into this short video, there’s sure to be plenty more to explore when Tears of the Kingdom finally launches on Nintendo Switch on May 12th.
