Late last week, Xbox studio Double Fine Productions uploaded a mammoth documentary to YouTube detailing the entire development process for 2021’s Psychonauts 2. While the 32-part document is likely full of trash With information on the studio’s plans, episode 30 in particular hints at what might be next for the team.
Studio head Tim Schafer talks about two other projects that were in the works before the release of Psychonauts 2, two projects that had to be put on hold at the time to allow the entire team to focus on the highly anticipated Psychonauts sequel. .
“Now things have moved into the boss phase. We’ve had a huge turnaround, we’ve actually stopped all development on all the other games including Derek’s game which is going to be amazing and I was so excited him doing this game and it’s sad to take a break.” It is. Now that Psychonauts 2 has been around for a while, it’s safe to assume that those projects are now back in the works of Double Fine. Note that this quote is from Before the game was released in 2021 while the document chronicles the entire development process before the release. Plans could certainly have changed since then.
However, even in 2021, we learned that several projects were already underway at Double Fine, and this new document has shed a little more light on what those projects could become. So it looks like it’s all over at the Xbox-owned studio!
