Hi-Fi RUSH proved to be an absolute hit last month, with developer Tango Gameworks delivering one of the highlights of the year so far straight to Xbox Game Pass. While the title was in production long before Xbox bought Bethesda, the team had some positive things to say about Microsoft’s involvement or lack of involvement in development.
In a new interview with UnGeek, Game Director John Johanas explained what it’s been like to work with Xbox as development on Hi-Fi RUSH draws to a close.
“The acquisition happened, so it was a bit easier for us because we were able to focus on the platforms it will launch to help us fine-tune the experience.
Other than that, it didn’t really have any effect on development.
In this sense, the experience with Xbox has been positive, since there has been no interference in a good way. They were like ‘go ahead with what you think sounds cool’.”
Johanas reiterated that Microsoft wants Bethesda to continue operating much like it did before the acquisition, something we’ve heard directly from Xbox in the past. While we’d love to see Microsoft build more Teams from scratch, it’s nice to see the company standing by when needed.
Bethesda’s next pre-purchase project to see the light of day will be Arkane’s Redfall, which will launch on Xbox Game Pass in May. Hopefully a similar stance is taken there – just like Tango, we trust Arkane to deliver something great!
