Hogwarts Legacy transports you to the end of the 19th century. You play as a young witch or fifth-year wizard who has just entered Hogwarts. Almost immediately after you arrive, Professor Fig begins teaching your character the basics of Magic for Dummies when he sees great potential in you: an untapped ability to perform “ancient magic.” He’s not the only one interested in these abilities, as an impending Goblin Rebellion is on the horizon and could have implications for your magic user. This rebellion is led by a goblin named Ranrok, who is new to the series. This is what we know of Ranrok so far.

Who is Ranrok?

Ranrok was created from scratch for the sake of Hogwarts Legacy, meaning this character doesn’t exist in the book universe. As a result, very little is known about Ranrok at the start of the game. He is the leader of the Goblin Rebellion in the 1890s and has teamed up with a powerful dark wizard, Rookwood, to accomplish his mission. But what could it be?

What if the Goblin Rebellion was just a diversion so Ranrok and Rookwood could get their hands on something bigger, like the secrets of ancient magic or the mystery that Eleazar’s wife Miriam was after price to discover before you die? We won’t spoil those answers here, but we will say that the Goblin Rebellion will be a key plot aspect in Hogwarts Legacy.

What role will goblins play in Hogwarts Legacy?

Thanks to the numerous trailers and gameplay showcases released, we know quite a bit about the game’s story and the goblins’ potential role in it. Of course, only some of the goblins in the game are likely our antagonists, and we don’t know what rebellion is all about. Is this a riot for goblin rights, as it once happened in the 17th century? Or is it related to ancient magic and the fact that certain creatures and other humanoids are contaminated in the game? Should we confront them or save them?

If only there was a fifth year student to lend a hand. With our help, Professor Fig investigates the death of his wife, Miriam, and our mysterious connection to ancient magic.
