Last year, Embracer bought the intellectual property rights to Lord of the Rings after the group’s subsidiary, Freemode, acquired Middle-Earth Enterprises.
The recent announcement of its five game projects suggests that the company may have big plans around the franchise, especially in the gaming arena.
Of course, games based on The Lord of the Rings aren’t new, with titles ranging from War in Middle Earth to LEGO Lord of the Rings. Of these many titles, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel Shadow of War are widely regarded as some of the best in IP, with the former even featuring its all-new Nemesis system.
Now, with The Lord of the Rings leading Embracer, the group looks set to cash in on the franchise’s massive popularity.
In its latest Q3 2022 earnings report, Embracer Group said there are currently five Lord of the Rings games in the pipeline through third-party partners. The group also mentioned that all of these titles will be released by the end of the 2023/24 fiscal year, meaning fans will be able to enjoy all five games over the next 24 months.
Although Embracer did not specifically list the titles, four of the Lord of the Rings titles have already been announced, including Daedalic Entertainment’s Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which is slated for release in 2023. Alongside Daedalic, d Other upcoming projects include Free Range Games’ The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, a mobile game from EA, as well as a title from Weta Workshop. This basically means there’s another Lord of the Rings in development that has yet to be announced.
