Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Game Studios, says his team uses AI to help make games. But he stresses that people come first in creating hits like Fallout and Starfield.

Howard shared this in a chat with Kinda Funny. He was talking up the new season of the Fallout TV show. AI helps speed up boring tasks, like checking tech in game worlds. It does not make art or stories on its own.

“The creative intent comes from the artists, above all,” Howard said. He compared AI to old Photoshop. “If you look back ten years, no one wants that old version anymore.” AI just makes work faster, like better tools do.

This comes as many game studios turn to AI. Over 60% of teams using Unity added it in 2024. GDC surveys show one-third of the industry uses it often. But some worry it will take jobs or hurt quality. Remember the game Postal: Bullet Paradise got canceled over AI fights.

Other big names weigh in too. Epic’s Tim Sweeney says AI will be in every game soon. Ex-Rockstar’s Dan Houser calls it like a bad disease spreading. EA sees AI as “thought partners.” Sega uses it only when it fits.

Bethesda keeps humans in charge. Artists decide looks and feel for Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Starfield, and even Oblivion updates. AI stays under watch to boost fun, not replace talent.

Fans like this news. It means more great games with real heart. Watch for Fallout season two and what Bethesda builds next.
