Chronic The Last of us: the series loses its director

Announced in March 2020, The Last of Us series gives its news. The team behind the project is gradually assembling, despite the loss of a director. Tiraxa takes stock in the first daily of the day.

Since the release of its first episode on PS3 in 2013, The Last of Us saga has seduced many players with its very careful writing and endearing characters, all in a post-apocalyptic universe. A cocktail that also convinced Home Box Office (Game of Thrones, WestWorld, Chernobyl …) to make a series of it. If we learned two months ago that the series was still on track, HBO had to review its cast.

An award-winning director at Cannes

Tiraxa indicates that the first episode of the series (or pilot) was to be directed by Johan Renck, the director of Chernobyl. But The Hollywood Reporter explains that for a matter of planning, Renck left the project. He was immediately replaced by Kantemir Balagov, a Russian director awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. A coherent choice for Naughty Dog: in its games, the studio emphasizes human relations in difficult contexts, a field that Balagov masters. And this is all the more relevant in view of the history of the series since it will feature two close friends, traumatized by World War II.

To conclude, Tiraxa reports that despite the replacement, the team in charge of the series is intact. Neil Druckmann (co-president of Naughty Dog) is overseeing the project which includes Craig Mazin (creator and screenwriter of Chernobyl) as well as Carolyn Strauss, producer at HBO. However, she recalls that no actor has been approached for the roles of Joël and Ellie.
