Almost daily we hear about sales records of millions of copies of video games of the moment, although there are also those that continue to increase year after year. And then there’s Candy Crush, who turns 11 tomorrow. Right now this free title has been downloaded 3 billion times.
The almost unfathomable number was revealed in a MobileGamer.biz interview with Candy Crush boss, green todd. We already knew (thanks to King’s latest quarterly report) that Candy Crush had 233 million monthly active users during the fourth quarter of 2022, and it makes it very easy to understand why Microsoft wants to buy Activision Blizzard, of which King is a part.
With King under its cloak, Microsoft immediately becomes a major player in the mobile gaming space, and we have to assume that Microsoft wants all of these users to become part of the Xbox ecosystem over time for a huge boost. . Green himself had this to say about the merger:
“We remain focused on King and our business, but what I can say is that King is excited about the possibilities the merger could bring.”
Microsoft said an important part of the deal was its ability to expand into the mobile space. We are excited that King can be a part of this potential future, although for now we will continue to operate as two separate companies.”
