The new Harry Potter game, Hogwarts Legacy, already has a very unofficial and very… different “remake” in the works, as an intrepid developer reconstructs the entire RPG in a single day, with the intention of releasing its version good Hogwarts Legacy market as a fully playable free game – a nice diversion when we reach the Hogwarts Legacy early access period.
Creator of Lego Fallout and Lego God of War, ThrillDaWill accomplished the seemingly impossible task of creating Hogwarts Legacy, or at least a playable version of Hogwarts Legacy, in 24 hours. Using the Unreal Engine, the developer starts by importing a basic character model and movement system.
Everything seems fine, but ThrillDaWill has a problem with Hogwarts school uniforms. Modeling capes and robes that realistically float as you move takes a lot of work. Over time, ThrillDaWill implements a quick system to make the bottom half of outfits react to movement and move forward quickly; the result is, well… the outfits pass.
The developer then adds a wand that fires a green beam and imports an out-of-the-box inventory and collection system. Enemies come in the form of pre-built zombies and goblins, then ThrillDaWill finds a model of Hogwarts castle and spends hours adding textures to each of its 3 million polygons.
Broomstick flight is… even more complicated. ThrillDaWill installs on a basic modern cleaning broom and creates a rough system for you to fly around the map. Using motion capture software, the developer records custom animations, then adds a quest in which you must find Butterbeer for Hagrid, which appears as a polygonal recreation of the PS1 Hagrid from The Philosopher’s Stone.
ThrillDaWill calls their game “Wacky Wizard Legacy”, but it’s currently too big to fit on Itch. The developer says they’re doing “some optimizations” and will soon be on the platform, giving us a very, very cheap version of Hogwarts Legacy completely free.

Harry Potter series creator JK Rowling has made a number of transphobic comments on social media in recent years. Warner Bros. has the license to create games based on Harry Potter. Although the details of this agreement are not known to the public and WB Games claims that “JK Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game”, it is likely that as creator and owner of the intellectual property of Harry Potter, she receives royalties on your sales.
