A little over 21 years after the birth of the Xbox brand, it is once again going through another very important moment in its history. Last year’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media (Bethesda) was huge, and now Microsoft is spending a lot of time, attention, and money trying to acquire Activision Blizzard as well.
The idea of Microsoft selling the Xbox seems ludicrous at this point, but there’s actually been quite a bit of talk about it this week. According to the VGC editor, “many industry insiders” believe that if Activision Blizzard’s acquisition is stalled, Microsoft might be interested in dropping the brand. Yes seriously!
“I know that many industry insiders believe that MS selling Xbox is a real possibility in the event of a crash (still hope it will come with concessions).”
“I don’t expect that to happen, but I can say with authority that some important people do.”
Now, before anyone gets too worried, let’s keep a few things in mind. First of all, the journalist in question does not expect this to happen anyway. Second, it seems a little more likely that the Activision Blizzard deal will go down in Microsoft’s favor starting this week. And finally, Phil Spencer recently mentioned that Xbox’s long-term existence doesn’t depend on the ongoing acquisition.
However, we know that Xbox has had problems before. In 2014, Microsoft considered pulling out of Xbox and stopping investing in it; maybe the brand would have been removed entirely or maybe it would have been sold?
In other words, it’s not impossible to imagine that Microsoft could one day find itself in a scenario where the company makes the decision to abandon Xbox. The question is, do you think it will ever happen, and if so, when might it happen?
Let us know what you think in the poll and comments section below.
