California State University Fullerton is extremely cautious today after a student emailed his professor asking for the class to be canceled ‘for the good of humanity’ due to the The Nintendo Direct presentation will air later today.
While the individual later followed up and admitted it was a “bad joke”, it was still enough to make people nervous. The CSUF Police Department said the email contained “a vaguely perceived threat.” For this reason, there will be more security measures on campus today “out of an abundance of caution”.
The full review reads as follows:
Tonight we move away from a vaguely perceived threat on campus received by a professor via email. The email referred to a once-in-a-lifetime event that would happen tomorrow, February 8, and the person urged the professor to cancel the class for the sake of humanity.
After hours of investigation by our detectives, we have learned that a Nintendo Direct event will occur on the exact date and time the person suggested the course be cancelled.
The individual, believed to be a CSUF student, then contacted the professor via email and admitted it was a bad joke regarding the Nintendo Direct event.
As a precaution, there will be additional officers on campus tomorrow, Student Community Services Officers and Community Services Specialists will be highly visible, and our K9 team will be roaming the campus and buildings.
We understand that a threat of any kind, real or not, causes many people to fear for their safety. Please know that we will do everything we can to keep our university community safe.
Nintendo Directs are often seen as something to celebrate as they contain exciting news and announcements for fans. In this case, things may have gone too far.
Today’s Nintendo Direct will air at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm UK / 11pm Europe.
