In addition to the top sellers in 2021, there is another ranking in Steam’s annual review that is worth a closer look. It’s about the most played games of the year. Of course, we don’t want to withhold this ranking from you. However, there are a few things to consider before looking at the rankings.
How did this ranking come about?
In contrast to many other rankings in Steam’s annual review, the decisive factor in this case is not the commercial success of the games, but rather the number of simultaneously active users. All titles that are there in this regard at least 30,000 players have brought, were able to secure a place in the ranking.
However, the Steam operators have in the calculation all short term peaks removed that arose as a result of free events, gift promotions or similar events. These would have distorted the result.
These are the most played games on Steam in 2021
As with the top seller list, this ranking is divided into the categories “bronze”, “silver”, “gold” and “platinum”. The latter category includes all those titles that have it at least 200,000 simultaneously active players brought.
These include the MMO New World and the popular survival game Valheim. But long-running hits like the MOBA Dota 2 and GTA 5 can also be found in the platinum region.
There are by the way no particular order in the listing of the games, therefore you cannot draw any conclusions for a specific placement from it. You can find the full ranking on the Steam website, here is the platinum category in the overview:
- Valheim
- Dota 2
- New World
- Halo Infinite
