After a successful beta launch in July 2022, Multiversus Steam’s numbers sadly hit an all-time low this week as the fighting game and former rival to Brawlhalla sees its daily countdown over 99%.

With a host of Marvel and DC characters, plus animation mainstays like Rick and Morty and Bugs Bunny, Multiversus seemed like a guaranteed hit. However, disappointment with its seasonal updates, as well as criticism over microtransactions, seems to have taken a serious toll on its popularity on Valve’s PC store.

On Monday, February 13, for the first time in its history, Multiversus failed to attract 1000 concurrent Steam players, and the game peaked at 986 concurrent users. As calculated in an original VGC report, compared to its launch day player base (143,000 on day one, over 153,000 on day two), this specifically represents a decrease of 99.3574% fewer Multiversus players of seven months.

Despite launching with a solid roster of characters, Season 2 of Multiversus only introduced one new fighter in the form of Marvin the Martian. Some character variants are also locked behind expensive paywalls, which may have contributed to players leaving the game in favor of a more affordable fighter.

Meanwhile, Multiversus Season 3 has been pushed back to March 31, with developer Playerfirst saying it will extend Season 2 to help players “get to the end of the current battle pass.” It remains to be seen if the third season of Multiversus will see the free-to-play game win back some of its Steam player base.
