“The distinctive exterior of the R1T is highlighted in the demo by the new Substrate shading system, which gives artists the freedom to dial in and layer different shading patterns to achieve levels of fidelity and quality previously not possible. in real time. The substrate comes in version 5.2 as experimental.”
“The next-gen R1T features the latest technology and vehicle physics, with the truck’s digital twin featuring precise tire deformation as it hops over rocks and roots, and true independent air suspension that softens as you splash through mud and puddles with fluid realistic water simulation and reproduction.
“Additionally, the large open-world environment is built using artist-created procedural tools that build on a small, hand-placed environment where the adventure begins. Shipping as Experimental in the version 5.2, new procedural content in the editor and runtime generation (PCG) tools allow artists to define rules and parameters to quickly fill large, highly detailed spaces that are artistically addressable and work smoothly with content placed by hand.
Perhaps even more impressive than the Unreal Engine 5.2 trailer was Epic’s demo of the “Metahuman Animator”, which showed Hellblade actress Melina Juergens taken on an iPhone and then transformed into a very realistic human model in a matter of seconds. minutes only. MetaHuman Animator will allow you to use your iPhone or Helmet Mounted Stereo Camera (HMC) to reproduce any facial performance as high fidelity animation on MetaHuman characters. With it, you’ll be able to capture the individuality, realism, and fidelity of your actor’s performance, and transfer every detail and nuance to any MetaHuman to bring it to life in the Unreal Engine.”
“Scheduled for release in the coming months, MetaHuman Animator will produce the facial animation quality required by AAA game developers and Hollywood filmmakers, while being accessible to independent studios and even hobbyists. With the iPhone you may already have in your pocket and a standard tripod, you can create believable animations for your MetaHumans that will bond emotionally with your audience, even if you don’t consider yourself an animator.”
Awesome stuff, then, and there’s plenty more where that came from – the full State of Unreal 2023 event is worth checking out if you’re interested, which also included details of a massive new feature from the Unreal editor for Fortnite.
