Masahiro Sakurai is famous for his work on Smash Bros., but he’s worked on a variety of other titles throughout his career, including Meteos. In the latest video on his YouTube channel, he delved into the origins of the game and even shared a suggestion he made to help explain things a little easier.
During his days of supervision and consulting, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who was at SEGA before co-founding Q Games, asked Sakurai to create a falling block puzzle game. Interestingly, Sakurai said he’s not very good at these kinds of titles. I wanted to do more than the risk/reward game they offer (like building a high stack in Tetris which is a risk and then knocking them down one big reward at a time).
Another aspect that Sakurai considered was to come up with a concept beyond just destroying blocks. This led to the idea of having matched blocks “take off” and launch them spectacularly through the air.
You can watch Sakurai’s full video on Meteos below, including the proposal presentation.
Meteos originally came to South Dakota in 2005. It spawned a few other related games, including Meteos: Disney Magic in 2007.
