The new Rainbow Six Siege MouseTrap anti-cheat is another addition to the ever-growing list of FPS gaming protection systems. Specifically targeting counterfeiters, Ubisoft hopes that MouseTrap will put an end to some of R6’s most irritating cheats.
Ubisoft states that “input spoofing is one of the biggest complaints we get from our community”, acknowledging that “it’s really unfair to play against these players when you’re at such a disadvantage”.
“Spoofers” spoof your locations using several different tools, allowing them to constantly change your IP address to evade the game’s anti-cheat tools. This has been a constant problem for Rainbow Six and online gaming in general. , but Ubisoft is confident it has something that can fix the problem.
Enter MouseTrap, the new multiplayer gaming anti-cheat system that helps identify “which players are cheating and when they are cheating”. Specifically, it targets those who use a mouse and keyboard to play games on the console.
Mid-season, if a player is caught spoofing MouseTrap will begin “to add additional latency to their inputs”. Ubisoft goes on to say that the latency will increase over multiple matches if the player continues to fake it. To alleviate this latency, simply remove the mouse and keyboard and return to the controller.
Ubisoft notes that it has worked with the internal accessibility team to ensure this only affects impersonators, allowing the rest of the playerbase to play in peace.
MouseTrap also comes with a new voice chat tracker, which will automatically mute abusive players (although if you want to re-enable them, you can). If you get angry in the chat, you’ll receive a series of warnings followed by a ban, which spans multiple matches and will likely result in a ban if you continue to offend.
Over the years, Siege has unfortunately become somewhat synonymous with hacking and cheating, with an incident in the latter half of 2022 where hackers posted indecent images using the game ban font. Hopefully MouseTrap and the new voice chat system do their job, as previous anti-cheat systems have been a bit lackluster, although thankfully QB has done some work since its revival in December.
