atomic heart finds hijo inspiration in major works like bioshock, To fall UNIT Wolfenstein without ever raising their ankles. Worse, with its unsurprising story and its choices in bad taste and vulgarity (the distributor with comments below the belt, or the hyper-sexualized robot twins), it leaves an ugly feeling of immaturity and unwelcome levity. Because at the same time, with as an original and serious starting point a retrofuturistic dystopia in a triumphant USSR thanks to its technology, it gives a big gap that breaks any immersion. In 16 hours to see the end of it, I have never been passionate about this predictable variation of bioshock in the land of the Soviets. Never.

For the (poly)mother country!

atomic heart tells us about a Soviet golden age when the USSR emerged as THE great winner of the Second World War and on the way to dominating the world, mainly thanks to science. Science in general, robotics in particular, but also cybernetics through a polymer allow inventions that go beyond understanding. vertido especially the 50s in which this retrofuturistic dystopia takes place. The prologue stages this socialist paradise by turning into the “soviet porn”, with communist symbols all over the place, an immaculate and idyllic environment, a happy and prosperous population…

After finishing the game, in my opinion as a 40-year-old westerner, I thinkatomic heart does not condone or be complacent towards the USSR. But after all, I am neither a specialist nor a historian and I can only give my feelings. He just chooses to start from the premise that the USSR is on the way to dominating the world and explores what that could have been like. And that’s hardly commitment. But then not at all. The varnish of the prologue described above crumbles quickly to unroll a story sewn with red thread, with an unfortunately predictable conclusion. Even more so if like me you have traveled long, wide and across the bioshock, Wolfenstein and others To fall.

The plot is based on a revolt of robots in ultra-modern facilities where the “Kollectiv” program is designed. The preservation of this new jewel of Soviet science is the pretext for the intervention of the hero, Major Netchaiev, the henchman of the designer of Kollectiv… Moreover, as the situation is catastrophic, there is grafted on top of a power struggle between poderosos of politburo around this new program about to be released and which promises to make the people happy by connecting all the minds of the Earth…

The student does not exceed the master

The pitch is clearly reminiscent of The United Nations bioshock revisited coconut salsaagrees. Especially since I give it to you in thousand: the protagonist has amnesia! No kidding. Evidence, Envió nosotros twisted shots and pseudo-revelations Arrivalr miles away. Taking a super-powerful USSR as a starting point: why not, it’s original, but with the backdrop of Kollectiv which is, oh boy, a program for the enslavement of the masses, it’s absolutely not credible. No sane person would handcuff themselves! Thus, from the start ofatomic heart, disappointed with Barely B-movie (Olshevik) scriptI had all the trouble in the world to get excited.

However, there are a few moments that caught my attention.like dialogs criticizing the mode of operation, the heaviness and the cowardice of decision-making at the highest level of Soviet power. Because why, instead of a single man, however talented he may be, not send the army to subdue the disordered robots? If not to smother the affair as quickly as possible and above all to save themselves the loaves. And what about this conversion where a woman is tired of Soviet-style happiness, she is tired of smiling because the powerful want her to smile. She has this wonderful phrase: “Happiness is a unique and tailor-made product. A personal masterpiece. We cannot decide to mass-produce it in the factory”. These few flashes are hits but are rare.

These few phases there, plus the absurd exaggeration of the Soviet decorum make me think that it is not a question of pro-USSR propaganda, nor even of misplaced fantasized nostalgia. This clearly makes me lean more towards a somewhat failed or weak attempt to propose a variation of bioshockwithout clearly lega him in the ankle.

Puzzle Atomic Heart 1

Spectator of his own destiny

I failed 16 hours to see the epilogue of this daring mix between FPS y rompecabezas environmental with a bit of a platform. Please note, this is not an open world. Even if you can explore large sections in search of gear, the sequence and progression remain linear. Especially since as our character is being walked around by everyone, we are extra than actor. This bias genero works perfectly in bioshock for example. Here, it is above all frustrating.

The fights are nervous thanks to an arsenal provided with classic weapons such as the Kalashnikov and some futuristic craziness such as a railgun. With the addition of a glove allowing telekinesis, electrocution and other joys, it energizes even more the clashes that do not lack pep. On the other hand, the enemies are not very varied and turn in circles very quickly. It’s in the picture decors that resemble each other throughout the adventurewith these sanitized and sad laboratories. There is only a trip to the theater to awaken the retinas a little, without reaching a hallucinating level of extravagance either.

how many auxiliaries puzzlesthey are sometimes very simple and very quick, like restoring electrical circuits. But it happens that a puzzle takes place in a large room, so you have to take your time, do aerobatics to reach the different elements… But I prefer to be clear: that box the rhythm ofatomic heart. After a long phase of corridor or exploration, falling on another shot-shot sequence made me yawn more than reason, even swear in exasperation. A real roller coaster in terms of rhythm.

The redneck who came from the cold

It’s also a roller coaster on the bottom. With the watermark of a story that takes itself seriously, we have to endure things clumsy as desired, vulgar and immature. A languorous-voiced distributor/workshop spends her time every time we interact with her, coming out with under-the-belt talk. Colgante 4 p.m., it’s painful. Add to that, here and there, ABSOLUTELY NOT discrete phallic symbols which underline studio immaturity. In front of heartbreaking and vergonzoso spectacle of robots simulating a sexual act or an umpteenth heavy diatribe of the distribuidor, impossible to really immerse oneself in the adventure of our agent without sighing or glancing at the sky.

Técnica level, nothing to say: it’s quite correct and above all always fluent. There cold and sanitized artistic direction reinforces the idea that we are struggling in a giant open-air and sophisticated prison. Finally, atomic heart East fully translated into French. Unfortunately, some dubbing lacks conviction or accuracy, but overall it’s still decent. Apart from the favorite sentence of the hero which is quickly painful and irritating. I let you discover it ^^.

Atomic heart decor

I appreciate:

  • FPS game is Russian
  • Puzzles and Exploration
  • Integration translated into French

I least liked :

  • Vulgar and immature elements
  • Little freedom (at the same time, with the USSR…)
  • The lack of variety of scenery and enemies
  • Too many puzzles in certain sectors break the rhythm
  • The story never took me on board, a nanar who takes himself too seriously
