According to the latest data from market researchers at Ampere Analysis, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are not selling much faster than the consoles of the previous generation.
Microsoft’s hardware is said to have sold a total of 2.8 million times since its launch. That’s 100,000 less than the Xbox One sold over the counter seven years ago. And even with Sony, the direct comparison between PS5 and PS4 is currently about the same.
According to the numbers from Ampere Analysis, the next-gen console has already been sold 4.2 million times. The PS4 did that in the first few months after its launch.
This time, the PS5 was also sold directly in Japan – a difference to the sale of the PS4. The market situation is, however, significantly different this year.
Accordingly, the demand for the PS5 is still extremely high. According to Ampere Analysis, the console could have converted up to 8 million units before the end of March. With this value, the next-gen console would have trumped its predecessor by 500,000 copies.
In addition, the pandemic and the current need for processors are also likely to have a noticeable impact on sales. Because not only the next-gen consoles, but also new graphics cards are currently difficult to get.
Nintendo could also look forward to a successful year. The Switch was sold a total of 26.3 million times last year – a new record for the Mario company.
