Sony presented its most recent financial results in which the company indicates that the PS5 has managed to sell 7.8 million units until March 31 of this year.
Thus, in just five months it managed to overcome the premiere of PS4, which reached 7.6 million.
According to the company, the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers is 47.6 million, which is an increase of 14.7 percent over the last year.
Figures for the fourth quarter bring the global PlayStation business to a total operating profit of 342.2 billion yen ($ 3.14 billion) in fiscal 2020, a record for Sony.
The most recent report also indicates that the company had shipped 4.5 million PS5 units worldwide by the end of 2020. This means that from January to March 3.3 million consoles were shipped, revealing the current large manufacturing capacity of the company.
In the wake of these positive numbers, many analysts are quick to point out that this has been the best year for Sony’s games and services division.
Regarding the sale of video games, between April 2020 and March 2021, 338.9 million digital and physical copies were sold for PS4 and PS5. Thus, 65 percent of these sales were digital, while 58.4 million correspond to first-party game units.
It is worth noting that these positive numbers for Sony occur in the context of a pandemic, where PS5s are notoriously scarce compared to public demand.
