playstation shooting games they take up 40% of total playtime on PS5 and PS4. This data was revealed by documents related to Microsoft’s controversial acquisition of Activision shared by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Call of Duty and Destiny among the most popular shooters on PlayStation
Much of the CMA document is redacted because it shares sensitive business information not suitable for public consumption, but that hasn’t stopped prospectors from finding gems.
Just yesterday, it was revealed that revenue generated from Call of Duty allows Sony Interactive Entertainment to fund high-quality exclusives like God of War. Now, we know that shooters are so popular on PS5 and PS4 that they account for nearly half of the consoles playtime.
“We note that two of Activision’s main console games, Call of Duty and Overwatch, are in the shooter genre,” the CMA report states. “The shooter genre is a big part of the publishing market, especially on consoles.”
The report goes on to state that shooters not only make a significant contribution to PlayStation’s overall playtime, but also to its revenue.
Call of Duty and Destiny are mentioned throughout the document. While the former was a major point of contention around the acquisition, the latter was acquired by Sony when it bought Bungie.
