It had long been indicated that Outriders would be a great success: In the past few weeks, the Loot Shooter has regularly placed itself in the Steam Charts, although the release was still a long way off.
The game was released on the evening of April 1, 2021 and can boast huge numbers of players. However, crossplay and server problems as well as connection errors are currently causing a lot of frustration among the players.
Outriders is Square Enix’s biggest Steam release
Even the demo for Outriders, which will still be available after the release, attracted tons of players: on February 25, 2021, over 55,000 players were online at the same time to try out the title and level up their characters for the full version.
The finished game has now even doubled this number: According to Steamdb, around 112,000 players were online on the evening of the release. With that, Outriders is now officially publisher Square Enix’s biggest Steam launch, based on player numbers.
So far, this title was Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which can look back on up to 52,000 players in 2016 at the same time.
Connection problems cause frustration for gamers
However, Outriders’ success is just about to fatal: The servers of the co-op shooter could not withstand the onslaught of fans and are currently totally overloaded. Many players complain of connection errors so that they cannot log in at all.
If it does work, it is not uncommon for them to be thrown out again after a while. In addition, there is the problem that players do not get a HUD displayed. Problems like this are not uncommon with the release of large online games, but they still create a lot of frustration.
This is currently also reflected in the Steam Reviews: Of 3,500 reviews submitted, only 61 percent are currently positive – although most players actually like Outriders. But people would just like to be able to play it too.
