The new Sims 4 expansion game shows us that growing up together doesn’t always mean growing in harmony. The Sims 4 Growing Together expansion pack arrives in March and focuses on relationships between family members in the game of life. As a new trailer shows, that means more options for how your Sims interact and how they make (or break) bonds with others.
As many people are well aware, families are not always the picturesque center of love and support that they claim to be. While many of us are lucky enough to be close to your family members, unfortunately this is not true for everyone. Relationships are strained, ideologies clash, people are separated: the bond between family members can often be one of the most complex and difficult of all, for a number of reasons.
The Sims 4 Growing Up seeks to better capture this reality, allowing you to hone in on the relationship dynamics between family members to provide a better representation of the different ways families can behave. As seen in the Growing Together gameplay trailer below, you can choose from a number of different “family dynamics” to represent the relationship between individual Sims within a family setting.
In the trailer, we can take a look at four possible options. “Near” and “Far” seem to be the simplest and represent the family that has spent a lot of time together or that has separated. “Hard” lets you capture a more adversarial relationship, while “Jokesters” is a good fit for those classic sibling banter that sees you teasing and teasing each other in a more loving and fun way.
EA Maxis says this system will go beyond a simple menu choice, and you’ll be faced with making key decisions that can affect your Sims’ relationships. “For example, will they allow their parents to move in with them? Saying “no” will affect those relationships, and saying “yes” could make life at home much more difficult. You will also have to deal with possible ramifications. “What if your Sim’s parents don’t get along with their partner?”
“New relationships also become more dynamic,” EA continues, explaining that these ideas extend to new systems of social chemistry by making friends (or enemies). “For you, the choice might be whether you want to keep the peace or cause a little drama.” It’s definitely another step up in social sim gaming, with more options to tell your own set of stories.
