At Friday’s D23 Expo, media giant Disney unveiled, among other things, a series of new game-related announcements connected to the various Disney properties. Updates for older and recently released titles as well as all-new Disney games based on classic Disney shows and Star Wars have joined the company’s roster of productions.
If you don’t have time for that, we’ve taken the liberty of rounding up the most notable Disney and Marvel Game additions here, arranged in alphabetical order.
Not to be confused with the legendary horror game. Amnesia the dark descent, this new game a different terror: To see that a plan goes wrong and all your little soldiers die. It is a tactical title, destined for consoles and PC in 2023. The game was first revealed at this year’s Summer Game Fest, but new gameplay was shown at D23.
Pandora comes to your Android or iOS device in the form of Avatar: Reckoning, a new mobile MMORPG. A developer update revealed more gameplay, showcasing character customization and multiplayer battles. Coming soon”.
Disney Island of Illusion
This new cartoony Disney Switch-exclusive game stars Disney’s Fantastic Four (apart from Marvel): Micky, Minnie, Donald and Goofy. The OG quartet reunites in a co-op focused 2D platform adventure. It’s coming to Switch on a “TBD” date.
Disney Speed Storm
Disney is known for theme parks, but once Disney’s Storm Speed go-kart racer comes out later in the year, it may be known for the racetrack (some of them evoke theme parks). The latest trailer promoted a course based on Monsters Inc., with cameos from Mike, Sully and Randy. The game comes to Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Xbox One.
Youngsters are unlikely to remember the old ’90s cartoon gargoyles particularly well, but its adaptation of the Disney game for the Sega Genesis is being remastered for consoles and PC by Empty Clip Studios. Marvel New Media and Skydance‘s Untitled Adventure Game
The development of this game is so early that it doesn’t even have a title, but its developers have an established concept. It is a “narrative-driven ensemble adventure,” featuring an original story set in the Marvel Universe. It’s a WWII-era setting, with Captain America and Black Panther fighting alongside Howler Commando Gabriel Jones and Wakanda warrior Nanali. Amy Hennig, formerly of Naughty Dog and a key creator behind the Uncharted series is leading the project. No platforms were announced, but consoles and PC are a safe bet.
A Marvel game previously announced in May, the Marvel Companion Card Game has a release date now: October 18, 2022. It’s a Marvel-branded take on Hearthstone or any number of trading card games based on it. on mobile devices that populate the space.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns
After being pushed back once, Marvel’s Midnight Suns was pushed back another time, to a final release date of December 2, 2022. The game is an unusual, magic-focused take on Marvel’s canon. D23 Expo saw some new gameplay footage and more on the tactical battle and storytelling of the game. The game also has some tactical pedigree, being developed by XCOM and Civilization studio Firaxis. The game is headed to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. A series of “Prequel Shorts” featuring the backstory will premiere on the Marvel YouTube channel on October 31, 2022.
Marvel world of heroes
A new geolocation-based game from Pokémon GO developers Niantic, Marvel World of Heroes brings that familiar AR feel and encourages people to go out and play in physical locations (while glued to their phones).
Based on the classic sci-fi movie, Tron: Identity comes from Bithell Games (developer of John Mecha Hex and Thomas Was Lonely), and is apparently a visual novel. Little more about the story was revealed.
Updates and more
In addition to new and upcoming titles, the D23 Expo Marvel and Disney Games showcase also showcased updates and re-releases of existing titles.
Disney’s recently released farming sim Valley of Dreamlight got a sneak peek at a new kingdom based on Pixar’s Toy Story in fall 2022, with plans to release a Lion King-based expansion later.
Disney’s mirror mobile RPG also got a sneak peek at its upcoming Halloween event, featuring Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas and other Disney villains.
To round things out, Marvel’s Strike Force teased the Red Hulk’s appearance next week on September 13, and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is getting a “Galactic Edition” re-release on November 1, 2022.
The Galactic Edition launches with 13 character packs: the 7 released for Character Collection 1 and 6 new to Character Collection 2. It’s more of an upgrade for new buyers, as all of the above except for an “Obi-Wan Classic Kenobi”. owners of the original release can purchase the character separately. The game comes to Switch, PS4, PS5, PC and Xbox One and Series X|S.
