Morrowind impressed players with its graphics in 2002. Nowadays, however, the vanilla version looks a bit old-fashioned, unless you install a total of 320 mods like the Youtuber Mr. Moonshine.
Then the game suddenly impresses again with atmospheric landscapes that can be seen for yourself in 2021, as you can see for yourself in the video embedded below.
2021 overhaul for Morrowind
The overhaul does not use the normal Morrowind as a basis, but the source port OpenMW. This not only fixes numerous problems of the original, but also polishes the graphics up with new features such as anisotropic filtering and support for normal, specular and parallax textures.
Better graphics for Morrowind: The Youtuber does not use large overhaul mods such as Morrowind Rebirth. Instead, he put together his own collection of fan improvements. They focus exclusively on the graphics and do not change the gameplay or the world of the game.
Larger game world: If, on the other hand, you want to travel to the rest of Tamriel instead of Vvardenfell, then we recommend taking a look at Tamriel Rebuilt. Thanks to this project, you can travel all over the mainland like in The Elder Scrolls Online.
So you install the mods
Mr. Moonshine not only uploaded a video of his modded game, but also provides one List and even the loading order of the mods used by him. Accordingly, you can shimmy along this and reach the splendor of the graphics yourself.
Thanks to the OpenMW administration, the installation is also more convenient than in the original. Because you no longer have to overwrite files and you can easily exchange mods. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Opens Mr. Moonshine’s mod list
- Look for the mentioned mods from the bottom up on Nexusmods
- Creates a mod folder in the OpenMW directory
- Unpack each individual mod in its own folder
- Now edit the openmw.cfg in the folder C: Users [NAME]DokumenteMy GamesOpenMW
- At the end of the file you add the individual mod folders with the command »data =”[Pfad zum Mod-Ordner]”«
- Last but not least, you activate the individual plugin files of the mods with the command »content =[Name des Plugins]«
- If you start OpenMW now, the mods will be loaded in the order specified in the configuration file and you can play.
Alternatively, you can of course also mod the game in the conventional way. Since you overwrite files for this, you save space. At the same time, this makes it harder to remove an unwanted mod.
Morrowind on smartphones and in Skyrim
If you have a powerful Android phone, you can play Morrowind including mods on your smartphone. Because the Github user xyzz always ports the latest release of OpenMW.
On the other hand, if you want to replace the entire engine right away, then you can take a look at Skywind. This is a total conversion that Morrowind completely recreates in the Skyrim engine.
