Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo Games Director and creator of Super Mario Bros., kindly asks you to stop calling him the Spielberg of video games.

It’s an undeniable truth that Miyamoto and Spielberg are legends in their respective industries: the duo faced off on Wii Sports (opens in a new tab) back in the console hay days. And indeed, Miyamoto has been dubbed the “Spielberg of video games” since a 1999 cover story for Time magazine (opens in a new tab). However, in a new interview with GameSpot(Opens in a new tab), he explained why he’s not a fan of the moniker. When asked what he thought of the comparison between Nintendo and Disney, Miyamoto replied this:

“Like you said, I’ve also been called the Spielberg of the gaming world, but I don’t really like that,” Miyamoto said. I am Miyamoto. Miyamoto is Miyamoto and Nintendo is Nintendo. However, I am very honored to be compared to Disney. But that being said, instead of comparing Nintendo to Disney, I feel like Disney to some extent, especially for families. , (represents) a sense of tranquility for families.

I’m just trying to interpret the true meaning of Miyamoto’s word “calm” in this context, but it sounds like he’s saying that Disney movies are a source of comfort for people and he thinks Nintendo can provide some something similar.

“I feel like Nintendo is well known for video games, and usually video games don’t mean silence. But Nintendo is associated with video games and the fact that Nintendo is compared to Disney really gives me the (confidence) that we’ve reached a point where we can bring Nintendo to the concept of reassurance and maybe (give that) so that’s something that I really feel like we’ve been able to achieve and I’m happy .”
