A collaboration between Mojang and Wizards of the Coast has resulted in an unusual product. A new game mode, inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, is coming to Minecraft.
At the D&D Direct 2023 conference, which focused on the popular tabletop RPG system, a big surprise awaited the audience. Minecraft will receive a new game mode, transferring elements and mechanics known from Dungeons & Dragons for gaming.
unusual combination
The new game mode in Minecraft is a 10-hour campaign designed for multiplayer. During it, participants will face many dangers and adversities, while the story itself will offer a variety of branching paths.
Mojang’s game will be enriched with a large number of elements of the popular RPG system. A new gear system will be introduced, along with familiar stats from J&Dused to describe characters. There will also be items, character classes, and the classic Forgotten Realms bestiary. The trailer featured, among other things, a chest-shaped mimic, a storm giant, and finally a mighty dragon.

In the information provided to GamesRadar, representatives from Mojang and Wizards of the Coast mention the upcoming game mode a bit:
“There will be dialogue with multiple options to choose from, as well as occasional dice rolls. So we have D20 (the number of dice walls – editor’s note) and the result will determine what the effect will be,” explains Riccardo Lenzi, senior producer at Mojang.
“I think his deep understanding and love for the brand will really shine through in the game,” said Wizards of the Coast senior producer Tom Sargent.
The concept of combining a tabletop RPG system with the skill-rich, open-ended character and gameplay of Minecraft seems exceptionally appropriate. It remains to be hoped that the new gameplay will perfectly combine the two universes into a coherent whole, which will appeal to fans of both brands.
minecraft dungeons and dragons will work with the Bedrock version of the gamemeaning it will be played on PC, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Android and iOS devices. The exact release date of the plugin has not yet been announced..
Minecraft Bestiary in Campaign RPG
In addition to the aforementioned game mode in Minecraft, the collaboration between Mojang and Wizards of the Coast has resulted in another interesting concept. Several classic monsters will make a special appearance in the world of Dungeons and Dragons.
As part of a minor expansion called Monstrous Compendium Volume 3: Minecraft Creatures, the following creatures will be adapted to the tabletop RPG rules:
- Glow
- Vine
- enderman
- Border Dragon
- Lobo
Avid dungeon masters will be able to use the materials prepared by the developers to surprise players with an unusual bestiary.
A set of creatures, specially prepared for D&D rules, will be available for free on the D&D Beyond platform.
