Microsoft just introduced a new brand and everyone thinks it is related to Minecraft.
In early March, Microsoft filed a trademark for something called “Ender Dragon (opens in a new tab)”. At this point, Microsoft just applied for the trademark and didn’t really approve of it, even though it explicitly relates to “entertainment services” like “computer games”.
In the Reddit post (opens in a new tab) where the new presentation was discovered, users are speculating what it might mean. “I hope this Ender Dragon is in Minecraft as a boss you fight in a new dimension called The End,” jokes one Reddit user, joking that this is definitely all an illusion.
The Ender Dragon, of course, already exists. He’s a mob boss in Minecraft that can only be fought in a dimension he spawns in, and is generally considered by many to be the “final boss” of Minecraft, if that’s anything, due to the fact that the text appears on the screen after you killed the beast.
It’s a bit odd that Microsoft is filing a new trademark application for something that already exists in one of its own games. It could be that the company is preparing some sort of Ender Dragon-related expansion for Minecraft, in which case it would make sense to be the sole owner of the creature’s naming rights.
Other Reddit users point out that it could very well be related to Minecraft Legends, which is due out in about a month on April 18. The bizarre strategy spin-off features a fully cooperative campaign to command creatures on a battlefield. or you can battle against your friends in online PvP. Could the Ender Dragon have a big presence in the new Minecraft spin-off?
Take a look at our Minecraft Legends Preview from earlier this year to see why the new game should definitely be on your radar.
