After months of waiting, Minecraft 1.20 has a name, but no one knows why the Trails & Tales update will be called.
Trails & Tales is set to introduce new features such as Archeology, a cherry blossom biome with rosewood, an armor customization system, and the new fan-voted mob, the Sniffer. It also has customizable signs, shelves, bamboo crafts, and perhaps most importantly, “funny grumpy” camels. It’s a pretty small collection of features for a named update, but hey, these are free additions to a game you probably bought a decade ago.
You might notice, however, that there’s a distinct lack of anything resembling a track or a tale in this feature list. “I think ‘random shit’ would have been a more appropriate name, but hey,” as one Reddit user put it (opens in a new tab). “Yeah. That’s definitely a name,” says another (opens in a new tab). “Which paths? Seriously, what trails? Maybe you can make the case for the stories with the jars and the bookcase,” another fan generously offers (opens in a new tab).
The response to the name hasn’t been overwhelmingly negative or anything – after all, it’s just supposed to be something a little catchier than ‘Minecraft 1.20’ – but it looks like developer Mojang is using a thought more creative to justify Trails & Tales.
“La actualización 1.20 tiene que ver con la autoexpresión”, says the director of the game Agnes Larsson in the blog of anuncios (se abre en una pestaña nueva), “specifically the autoexpresión through the representation, the narration of historias and the construction of the world. And it’s the journey, your trails, that ties it all together. Minecraft worlds belong to the players, and so do the stories or stories about those worlds.
Look, I don’t know, Caves & Cliffs only had literal caves and cliffs. The caves were not metaphorical. In any case, all features announced for Trails & Tales are currently available for testing in various snapshots and betas. No official release date has yet been announced, but big Minecraft updates tend to come out in late spring or early summer, so fans are expecting a release around June.
