Incredible but true: the console with the highest sales figures in the entire last year is the Nintendo Switch. Although she is already 4 years old and nowhere near the same hype as the competitors from Sony and Microsoft, she was able to quietly become the console champion of the year.

The most popular game for the Switch follows a similar trend. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has set a new sales record for 2020, continuing an unusual success story that the game has written since its launch.

2020 was a very successful year for Nintendo games launched last year. This applies to the popular game Animal Crossing: New Horizons, among others. But most wouldn’t assume that older games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would achieve similar success. Because even though it was released in 2017, the game had its best year ever.

New sales record

According to Christopher Dring of GamesIndusty.biz, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has managed to surpass last year’s sales in every subsequent year after its first release. That means the game has only gotten more popular over the years, even if there hasn’t been any DLC or additional features for the game since it was released.

This new sales record for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is primarily based on physical unit sales from last year and therefore does not include Nintendo’s digital sales.

Most successful year

So that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold more physical copies in 2020 than in previous years is even more impressive, especially when you consider that a number of stores that would have sold these copies were closed for part of the year. One of the most important conclusions to be drawn from this data: quality prevails and good games will eventually reach their players, even if it sometimes takes years!
