Super Mario Bros.

Gaming collectors have been known to spend a lot of money on rare finds, and that is what happened to an old Super Mario Bros. game. This almost perfectly preserved Super Mario Bros. game could become the most expensive gaming collectible ever sold, according to expert Chris Kohler.

On March 25, 2021, Kohler tweeted about a sealed Super Mario Bros. NES game currently listed on Heritage Auctions.

A week before the end of the auction, the price is $ 310,000, which could exceed the price of an original Nintendo PlayStation prototype that sold for $ 360,000. If so, this copy of Super Mario Bros. could, according to Kohler, be “the most expensive collecting game that has ever been sold”.

Another record

It wouldn’t be the first time Super Mario Bros. has broken records, either. A copy of the game sold for $ 114,000 in mid-2020. Why did this last copy of the game sell for such a high price?

At first glance, this game and the one that was sold last year look almost identical. Both feature the iconic cardboard flap that has become the hallmark of a vintage game. Both have a WATA seal rating of A +, the second highest seal rating awarded by WATA Games.

Evaluation of the two games

While the seal ratings are the same for the two games, the latest listing received a WATA rating of 9.6, while the previous game received a WATA rating of 9.4. Although a difference of 0.2 in the rating doesn’t sound like much, the current specimen offers almost three times as much, but that could also be due to the following aspect.

The edition of the game also influences the rating. The 9.6 rated version of the game was released within six months of the NES launch, evidenced by the lack of an NES GP code.

So not only is this version of Super Mario Bros. the best-preserved copy, it’s also older than the copy that will be sold in 2020. Such things are very important for collectors and the bid prices show that too.
