In October last year, Konami’s plans for the future of Silent Hill were finally announced, starting with a remake of Silent Hill 2 for PlayStation 5 by Bloober Team. However, many employees of Konami they actually wanted to kick off the revival of the series with a Silent Hill primer remakeas its producer explains.
Motoi Okamoto is the producer of the Silent Hill franchise within Konami and recently did an interview with IGN Japan, where he explained how Silent Hill returned to the company. As Okamoto explains, many people within Konami wanted to make Silent Hill games, but they all had different ideas.
When Motoi Okamoto joined Konami, he was put in charge of managing the Silent Hill franchise so that all projects follow the same direction, so he decided to take on the task of redefining Silent Hill’s identity as a brand. “We decided that if brand identity is a true psychological horror, we had to start by remaking Silent Hill 2.“says Okamoto.
We decided that if brand identity is a real psychological horror, we should start by remaking Silent Hill 2. Of course, some people within the company thought it was better to start with 1, but I wanted to start by this project. With something that symbolizes this identity.
Motoi Okamoto says some people within Konami thought it was best to start the Silent Hill revival with a remake of the first title, but the producer wanted to start with Silent Hill 2 because it symbolizes the identity of the franchise. “When you ask people what true psychological horror is, almost everyone will tell you it’s Silent Hill 2.”. This is how Okamoto justifies his decision to start with this remake.
The Silent Hill 2 remake that Bloober Team is developing should hit PlayStation 5 consoles before the end of 2023, so we might see a remake of the franchise’s other installments after release, just like Capcom did with their Resident Evil redone.
