Sons of the Forest is not your normal survival game. It really leaves you in the dark when it comes to understanding the mechanics. If you want to get an ax you have to get a crank gun and if you want to get a shovel you have to run all over the island. One of the basic tools you have access to is GPS, but even that is difficult to use. Understanding how to view the map is necessary to orient yourself on the island. This guide will show you how to zoom in and out of GPS in Sons of the Forest.
How to zoom in and out of the map in Sons of the Forest
When you first wake up on the island after the horrific helicopter crash, you will be given some basic survival tools. These items will help you get oriented and start gathering supplies. You’ll even have a sidekick named Kelvin who can help you with some of the heavy lifting, like collecting materials. One of the most basic elements it has is GPS. This item allows you to view the map and see where you are.
To open your map, all you have to do is press the M key. Unlike other survival games, Sons of the Forest only gives you a small handheld GPS instead of a full map menu. This makes it a bit harder to find your way around the island. When you look at the map, you will see various icons such as purple exclamation marks and flashing green dots. You can see more if you zoom in and out on the map.

To get a better view of the map, just click your mouse scroll wheel. This will allow you to cycle through the different views of the map. There is even a very magnified view that allows you to see a large part of the island. Unfortunately, there’s no way to see the full map without viewing it online. At least zooming out lets you see where the caves and other landmarks are.
