As of this writing, the Utopia Expedition is not available to begin. However, Sean Murray, one of the creators of No Man’s Sky, pointed out that Expedition will be available to players the day Fractal Update releases. This means that he should appear in the game very soon.

When it finally becomes available, to launch Utopia Expedition in No Man’s Sky, launch the game and select the single-player game mode. Instead of loading a save file, start a new one, to be taken to the game mode selection screen. This is where you can choose from the various modes on offer, including Community Expeditions. Hold down the corresponding button on the Expedition option to begin your journey in Expedition 9: Utopia. You will start a new save file and initialize your character as you would in any other new game.

The overall goal of the Utopia Expedition in No Man’s Sky is to restore an entire system to its former glory. Bakkin was a thriving system at one time, but is now in decline with trade routes shut down and a decaying space station orbiting the local star with the abandoned planets. To top it all off, abnormal solar activity prevents any player from creating outside of their refuges or planetary bases.

You are part of the Utopia Foundation, a group of people working together for system recovery. You will join an excellent rebuilding program and go through various stages that will bring the system back to life. If you complete all milestones and phases, you will unlock the Bio-Warden Companion. This helpful robot follows you everywhere and helps you with whatever you are trying to do.
