Everyone has a favorite son, and the roguelike title Hades is no different with Zeus’s Favorite Nephew mod. This mod allows players to select a favorite god from the Greek pantheon to shower the player with blessings, rather than random luck which tends to make races go wrong. The problem is that Hades is not an easy title to mod, so players will have to go through several stages for the mods to take effect. Here’s how to set Zeus mod Hades’ favorite nephew.

All necessary facilities for Zeus’ favorite nephew
Users need to install various files and applications to run Zeus’s Favorite Nephew. Using this list, download and install each app or library, in order, before proceeding to the next step.
- Python 3+
- After downloading, Python must be fully installed for calls and variables to work correctly. Don’t assume you have it, as that will lead to errors later in the process.
- Mod importer (for new format mods) for Hades
- This version of Mod Importer requires Python to be installed to run your Lua script.
- Move the extracted modImporter.exe to the Hades ‘Contents’ folder.
- Create a new folder called ‘Mods’ inside the ‘Content’ folder.

- modulation utility
- Extract this folder to the ‘Mods’ folder created in the previous step.
- Modulation setup menu
- Add to created ‘Mods’ folder.
- favorite nephew of Zeus
- Finally, the mod in question. Extract to the ‘Mods’ folder of the mod importer download and install step.
- Notepad++
- We will need to go in and fix a few bugs in the original mod code, which this program will allow us to do easily. Notepad++ is a very useful text editor for several programming languages, but it is not considered an IDE because it does not fully integrate with any language.
Download and install everything, making sure to place all files and folders in their proper locations.
Preparing Zeus’ favorite nephew for Hades
Before trying to start the game, you will need to do some fixes on your end. When Zeus’ favorite nephew is downloaded, the mod cannot work because it tries to call undefined variables in a script. Attempts to compile the mod without these fixes will result in a runtime error, where Mod Importer reports “bad modfile.txt command”.

Open the Zeus Favorite Nephew mods folder, navigate to the ‘Contents’ subfolder and cut and paste the Lua script into the containing folder, ‘ZeusFavoriteNephew’ so that it is next to modfile.txt.

Double-click the modfile.txt file to open it in Notepad. Delete the ModUtil~ command and replace it with ‘Load Priority 60‘, without quotes. Then change the wording of the second sentence to remove the call to subfolder ‘Content‘, which we remove. I should say ‘Import “NewTartarus.lua”‘. Save the file with Ctrl+S, then exit the editor to modfile.txt.

Users will then need to open ‘NewTartarus.lua‘ using Notepad++. In this folder we will put two lines of space at the top of the script and then redeploy the ModUtil library called RegisterMod. The full line you will need to implement is ‘ModUtil.RegisterMod(“ZeusFavoriteNephew”)‘, without the outer quotation marks, at the top of the hyphen.

Again, Ctrl + S to save changes to the file and exit Notepad++. Navigate to the ‘Content‘Hades folder and double-click’modimporter.exe‘, which should now have a Python icon accompanying the executable. The previous error, which signaled a critical bug, should now be replaced with code that runs correctly, by modifying the necessary files and importing the requested scripts into various modfile.txt documents inside all mod folders . If Mod Importer does not show an error, you are now ready to open Hades and configure the mod in game.

How to Install Zeus’ Favorite Nephew in Hades
The mod config we placed in the “Mods” folder should now show a new button – press “B” while in-game and look to the top left of your screen. A new button should appear called ‘configure mods.’ If this button does not appear, or if the mod importer scan or installation instructions failed.

If you’re lucky, you’ll find Zeus’ favorite nephew among your mods listed at the top of the screen. If not, you may need to add a new mod to the ‘changes‘ (Hades Randomizer is a small mod that will process Mod Config), recompile with Mod Importer then run the title.

Once Zeus’s Favorite Nephew appears in the in-game mod settings, you can safely remove the additional mod (rebuild with the mod importer after removing it) and the Zeus’s Favorite Nephew mod will remain available for your use in game settings. Select your favorite god from the Greek pantheon and start crushing those hell demons using this mod.
