One of the first puzzles you’ll encounter on your journey as a student at Hogwarts Legacy is the Door to Arithmancy, a locked room containing treasure chests filled with clothing and decorations from the Room of Requirement. Unlike typical lockable doors you can find all over the world, Arithmancy Doors cannot be opened using Alohomora, regardless of your spell level. Instead, this type of puzzle involves a simple addition game using the numbers and symbols displayed on the blackboard and outside door frame. Once you understand the basics of solving one, you can easily unlock all eleven Arithmancy Gates at Hogwarts.

To open an arithmancy gate, you must approach the puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy like you would solve an addition problem. Each gate will have three additions and a sum. Sum will always appear as a one or two digit number on the board, while additions can be a number or a creature symbol. Numbers naturally refer to the exact numbers they represent, but the numerical value of each symbol comes from the outer frame of the Arithmancy Gate.

For example, if we look at the Arithmancy Gate in the Astronomy Wing near the Flame Chimney in the Hall of Charms, we will see that the puzzle sums are “5” and “12” respectively. The top addition problem shows “3 + 0 + ? = 5” and the bottom says “Unicorn + 4 + ?? = 12.” The question marks refer to the two rotary knobs on the wall near the Arithmancy door. Now that we understand the mathematical problems of this particular, it is time to solve them to open the door of arithmancy in Hogwarts Legacy.

For the upper addition problem, the first “?” it should be the number “2”, which we can enter using the button to the left of the arithmancy door in Hogwarts Legacy. The button mechanism only shows creature symbols, but these symbols correspond to a numbered order from one to nine based on the door frame of the puzzle. Therefore, the “2” symbol we are looking for is Graphhorn’s head, based on the door frame.

Then you will remember that the second problem had a unicorn head. Looking again at the door frame, we can deduce that the corresponding number is “1”. Four plus one is five, and twelve minus five is seven, which means the creature symbol equals “7” is the solution for the “??” button, which is the squid icon. Once you have entered the correct symbols on both buttons, approach the Arithmancy Gate to open it in Hogwarts Legacy.

Each arithmancy door at Hogwarts is solved using the same method explained above, with two addition problems and two buttons with symbols corresponding to the door frame of the puzzle. If you ever have trouble finding buttons, consider launching Revelio to easily detect their positions nearby.
