Wild Heart’s diverse cast of Kemonos can effortlessly charm any newcomer. The Gritdog, a half-otter, half-marmot creature that inhabits Natsukodachi Island, is no exception. You will encounter this Kemono at Rogue Wave Reef for the first time, and it will continue to spawn in this area. However, don’t be fooled by its appearance. This seemingly defenseless cute creature packs a punch in battle. Let’s take a look at its weaknesses that it can exploit and some general strategies for defeating this monster.

As with all Kemono, Gritdog has specific weaknesses that you can take advantage of. Knowing this before you fight can easily mean the difference between victory and defeat. Keep them handy to make the fight much more manageable.

  • Weakness: Head
  • soft parts: front legs, body and hind legs
  • physical weaknesses: Cut and split
  • Attribute Weaknesses: wind and wood
  • weakness of the disease: poison
  • best karakuri: Elemental Lantern and Karakuri Spring

Strategy to defeat Gritdog

Generally, you’ll want to stick with what got you here when fighting Gritdog. The first attack you’ll want to watch out for is when Gritdog creates a magnetic field with his tail and manipulates iron and sand to deal damage. Most attacks that use this ability will come from underground, so when you see a dark spot on the ground, dodge quickly to avoid incoming damage.

The good news is that you’ll need to restock when you run out of iron sand. This is the perfect time to attack with your strongest weapon. You will do the most damage if you hit its head, as it is the weakest body part. However, keep your feet quick to gain distance as you recover. If you go for a long-range strategy like the bow, you can safely inflict headshot damage without risking a deadly counter. With melee weapons like the katana, you may want to be safer and attack the front, body, or back legs.

The Belly Flap move is next to watch. Gritdog will jump into the air and hit you with its belly. The best way around this is to spam your Spring Karakuri, but if that’s not available, dodge as quickly as possible.

Finally, when enraged, Gritdog will spawn an Ironsand Bulwark Karakuri, which will blast iron spikes and sand at you. Fortunately, you have a Karakuri that can help you in this battle: the Elemental Lantern. This Karakuri will mitigate all elemental damage, so you’ll take less damage from spikes that you can’t avoid.
