Encountering Macrocosm in Destiny 2’s Root of Nightmare raid can be a difficult task to complete. You’ll work with your team to move the various planets around the stage, then try to place them in the middle to deal enough damage to the boss to take them out. Coordination and communication will be key to get this part of the raid off the ground, and it may take you a few tries. Here’s what you need to know about how to complete the Macrocosm encounter in Destiny 2’s Root of Nightmares raid.
All Macrocosm encounter stages in the Root of Nightmares raid
Before the start of the match, we recommend that you divide your team into groups of three on both sides of the arena. There must be three players on each side of the arena. When you’re ready to begin, approach Zo’Aurc, or you can choose to shoot one of the Psions. The Psions will scatter around the arena and more enemies will spawn, with a handful of Psions spawning behind you.

Several enemies will cover the center of the room and Zo’Aurc will be immune at all times. Don’t worry about him while you clear the room, making sure the enemies aren’t too much to deal with. Eventually, on both sides of the arena, Honorable Centurians will appear. Be sure to eliminate these opponents, which will spawn lieutenants on the platforms on that side. There should be two lieutenants, one on each platform. Make sure a different player kills each of them, which should grant them a buff called Planetary Insight. When the first mate descends, a timer called Planetary Shift activates.

As long as you have Planetary Insight, you will see all three planets on this platform glowing black or white. What happens is that you have to change the planets on your platform to those on the side opposite you. To do this, interact with the icon under the planet labeled Planetary Attunement by crossing the room to the opposite platform and interacting with the planet the other player is moving.

You’ll need to communicate with your teammate on the other side to find out which planet they need to interact with, and they should tell you which one you need. There are several ways to report it, but this is what our team did.

This requires the opposing partners to know who they are exchanging with and know their voice when on a call. Once the planets have been successfully swapped, they should switch places and the “Indexed planets are revealed” notification will go to you and your party.
The next phase is similar to the previous ones where you take out the Centurious and take out the Lieutenant. The player who kills the lieutenant will receive another buff where they can see the planets, and now there are three in the middle. Now all the planets on either side of the room will be either white or black, and there will be two white planets and one black, or one white and two black planets on the plates in the center of the room.
You have to match these central planets to their respective colors, so if there are two white planets, the side with white planets will have to choose one on that side of the room to go to the central ones, and the same for the black planet. The same is true if there are two black planets and one white planet. Once you’ve successfully matched these planets, survive the next phase, where the planets you choose will face the center planets and should merge to be above the plates in the center of the room. then the boss damage phase begins.
During the boss damage phase, Zo’Aurc will have a distinctly glowing, dark red or white shield. If it is dark red, place yourself under the black planet; if it is bright white, get under the white planets with your team to damage it. You need to match their shields to the plates associated with those colors. You can keep doing damage to him during this phase until he becomes immune then move on to the next plate.

You must repeat this process until you reach the last point of health on his bar, and then you will finish the last confrontation against Zo’Aurc. You have three phases until he goes on a rampage and then wipes out your team, forcing you to try again.

The Last Stand will be similar to the other stages, where you have to bounce between plates to successfully deal damage to it. After defeating him, you can move on to the next and final phase of the Root of Nightmares dungeon.
