As you know, Burning Shores is the name of the next expansion for Horizon Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games. Before its premiere, which will take place in just over a month, the director of the adventure, Mathis de Jonge, talked about the advantages of not being held back by the hardware of the previous generation of consoles. With Burning Shores, the old and true PlayStation 4 is a thing of the past and everything is focused on optimizing the expansion for PlayStation 5.
It was in an interview for PlayStation Blog where de Jonge explained how Guerrilla Games, now hands-free, was able to create a “stunning post-apocalyptic version of Los Angeles”. When asked how they handled the PlayStation 4 while developing Horizon Forbidden West, which was released for both PlayStation 5 and its predecessor, he replied the following;
“On Horizon Forbidden West, anything we added or increased was something we needed to have a plan to optimize for PS4 as well. At Burning Shores, because we can only focus on PS5, we were able to move on thing, and we’re really excited.” of what we’ve accomplished creating this stunning post-apocalyptic version of Los Angeles.”
Another notable aspect is a battle scene that requires a lot of memory and processing power. In realizing this grand vision both technically and creatively, we have certainly appreciated the many benefits that PS5 hardware brings.”
Continuing the interview, he continues to praise the power of the current generation of PlayStation consoles, which unsurprisingly makes the PS5 version of Horizon Forbidden West a much better experience.
“On PS5, the base game of Horizon Forbidden West runs at a higher resolution and frame rate than on PS4, and the assets are more detailed, which greatly improves the overall quality. There is also a setting special lighting for Aloy which we normally only show during cutscenes, but are active on PS5 at all times.
On PS5, we’re able to draw in much more detail, showcasing the stunning vistas our players find all over the map. We also support 40Hz mode and variable refresh rate on compatible TVs for even smoother gameplay.”
We at Gamereactor are thrilled to have Aloy return on April 19th, and we’re also grateful that studios like Guerrilla are finally starting to let our dear old PlayStation 4 enjoy a well-deserved retirement.
